Four performances only, at the new Atterbury Theatre
South Africa’s most versatile dance company, Mzansi Productions, leading the way in blurring traditional divisions between ballet and dance, comes to Pretoria’s Atterbury Theatre this month with company’s dazzling production of DIVAS. Generous funding received by Mzansi Productions from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund helped to make this production possible.
First presented in 2010, the production has been enhanced for 2012 to make for an even more rewarding dance theatre experience. Musicians and singers share the stage with the dancers in songs made famous by legends Tina Turner, Shania Twain, Celine Dion, Rihanna, Mariah Carey, Edith Piaf, Barbra Streisand and others provide the music to which Mari-Louise Basson sets the stage alight with her richly inventive choreography. Music director is DuPreez Strauss.
In addition to Mzansi Productions’ own acclaimed dancers, among them Craig Arnolds and Cape Town International Ballet Competition finalist Angela Maree, audiences can look forward to the spectacular dancing of no fewer than six impressive dancers from Cuba – one woman and five men – who are working with Mzansi Productions on an extended visit to SA.
The Cuban line-up includes two medal winners from the last week’s Cape Town International Ballet Competition, Randol Figueredo and Ramiro Samon, who last wowed Gauteng audiences in the landmark production of the classic Don Quixote in October 2011.
DIVAS will be presented for just four performances at the Atterbury Theatre in Pretoria, marking Mzansi Productions’ first visit to this new venue.
